The Stockport Creative Campus (SCC) project, a partnership between Stockport Council, Madlab, Manchester Metropolitan University, Future Everything and IN4, aims to transform Stockport’s heritage-rich historic centre into a sustainable, world-leading digital arts neighbourhood.

A wide-ranging programme of public facing digital arts activities is already contributing to Creative Placemaking. For the project introduced below, Suzie Cloves, a PhD researcher from Manchester Metropolitan University, has developed a sonic augmented reality (AR) trail in Edgeley community to research how such experiences affect attitudes to place.

Do you want to learn more about Edgeley’s history and heritage?

We’ve developed a unique sonic augmented reality (AR) trail in Edgeley, a project that brings together the community’s informal heritage and official historic sites in a way that’s never been done before.

NOW HEAR THEN is not just a trail. It’s a community effort. It’s about sharing stories from all corners of Edgeley, from parks to pubs to churches and even Stockport County.

Activating the trail is simple. Just open a webpage on your phone, put on your headphones, and start exploring. The sounds will be triggered as you move around the area.

Alternatively, you can activate it remotely (at home or in the library, for instance) by dropping an avatar onto a map to activate the sounds, similar to Google Street View. So, that is an option for non-locals or people with lower mobility.

We need research participants.

It’s a research project to find out how the trail affects one’s attitudes toward the place, so I’m inviting people to fill out a couple of three-minute surveys as well as play with the trail.

Participants need to be 18 years old or older, able to understand English and will need access to an internet connection. We’d like to invite as broad and diverse an audience as possible because your perspective matters to us.

Thank you!
